Is the Omega Seamaster Worth It? Diver 300M, Aqua Terra and Planet Ocean

Which Seamaster to buy, what the Diver 300M offers, pricing context, value retention and when pre-owned is the better deal.

Is the Omega Seamaster worth it? For a versatile steel dive watch with serious engineering, yes. The Seamaster Diver 300M offers a Master Chronometer movement, 300 metres of water resistance and a helium escape valve. It usually costs well below a Rolex Submariner. It isn't a store of value in the way the most sought-after Rolex models are, and buying pre-owned is usually the better deal.

"Seamaster" covers several distinct watches, and the right answer depends on which one you mean.

| Model | Character | Water resistance | |---|---|---| | Seamaster Diver 300M | The core sports diver, with a wave-pattern dial and ceramic bezel | 300m | | Seamaster Planet Ocean | Larger and more robust, a heavier-duty diver | 600m | | Seamaster Aqua Terra | A dress-sports everyday watch with no dive bezel | 150m | | Seamaster 300 (heritage) | A vintage-inspired diver | 300m |

Most "is it worth it" questions are about the Diver 300M. The current 42mm model uses Omega's co-axial calibre 8800, certified as a Master Chronometer, and it has a helium escape valve at 10 o'clock.

Omega sets its retail prices and revises them periodically; the Diver 300M on a steel bracelet sits at the core of the range. Most Seamaster models are readily available at retail, so pre-owned examples typically trade below retail. Special editions and precious-metal versions are priced individually.

Strengths

What to weigh

The Seamaster is easy to sell but depreciates from retail, and the steepest drop comes early in ownership. That makes a recent pre-owned example with its papers the value sweet spot. Complete sets in unpolished condition hold their value best.

If resale value is your priority, a Rolex Submariner retains value better, but it costs substantially more to buy. See our comparison of the for what the Rolex route involves.

It suits buyers who want one tough watch for swimming, travel and everyday wear, who value engineering over investment performance, and who would rather spend less than Submariner money. If you prefer a chronograph with history, read .

Pre-owned makes sense for the standard Diver 300M, Aqua Terra and Planet Ocean, because the discount to retail is real and the watches are robust. Buy new if you want a current edition, or the full manufacturer warranty from day one.

Yes. The Diver 300M combines a Master Chronometer movement, 300m water resistance and a solid build at a competitive price.

It is easy to sell, but it typically resells below retail. Buying pre-owned reduces your exposure to that depreciation.

The Seamaster offers similar capability for much less money; the Submariner holds its value better.
