Cartier Santos Price & Value Guide: What It Costs, What It’s Worth, and Whether It Holds Value
What a Cartier Santos costs new and pre-owned, what drives its value, whether it's worth buying and how well it holds value.
What does a Cartier Santos cost, and does it hold value? The Santos de Cartier's price depends mainly on size (Medium or Large), metal (steel, two-tone or gold) and whether you buy new or pre-owned. Steel models are the entry point and the most liquid on the pre-owned market; gold and skeleton versions cost considerably more. Well-kept steel Santos models have historically held their value better than most fashion-house watches, though, like almost any watch, they don't reliably appreciate. For a live figure, the fastest route is to compare the Cartier pieces in our inventory against Cartier's current retail list.
What drives the price of a Cartier Santos
Rather than quote numbers that go stale within weeks, here are the variables that actually move a Santos price, in order of impact.
| Factor | Effect on price | |---|---| | Metal | Steel is the entry point; two-tone sits above; full yellow or rose gold is a different market altogether | | Size | Large (around 39.8mm) usually commands more than Medium, and it is the more requested size | | Dial and bezel | Standard silver and blue dials are the core; skeleton and gem-set versions are niche and priced accordingly | | Generation | The 2018 relaunch introduced QuickSwitch straps and SmartLink bracelet sizing, which buyers prefer | | Set and condition | Box, papers, extra strap and unpolished case lines all add value |
New versus pre-owned
Cartier sets its retail prices and changes them periodically. A new Santos from a boutique is priced at the full retail list. A pre-owned example of the current generation typically trades below retail, which is the main reason buyers choose pre-owned: you get the same watch, often with the original strap and papers, for less.
Older generations — the Santos Galbée and Santos 100 — trade in their own markets, and their prices depend heavily on condition and completeness.
Our own current example of the Santos Large, reference WSSA0018, is listed with its live price on the WSSA0018 reference page, and our long-form review of the WSSA0018 explains why it works as a daily watch.
Is the Cartier Santos worth buying?
For most buyers, yes — if you want a design icon that wears well every day. The Santos dates back to 1904, when Louis Cartier designed a wristwatch for the aviator Alberto Santos-Dumont. The square case, exposed screws and integrated bracelet have barely changed, and that continuity is a large part of its appeal.
Strengths
- A recognisable design with over a century of history
- An in-house automatic movement in the current steel models
- Tool-free strap changes (QuickSwitch) and bracelet sizing (SmartLink)
- It wears slimmer and more comfortably than many sports watches
Trade-offs
- The square case wears larger than its diameter suggests, so try the Medium before assuming Large
- Water resistance suits everyday wear and swimming, not diving
- A polished bezel shows scratches, and heavy polishing hurts value
Do Cartier Santos watches hold their value?
Steel Santos models from the current generation are among the most liquid Cartier watches on the pre-owned market, so they tend to hold value better than most fashion-house watches. Gold and rarer variants have a smaller pool of buyers, and they can take longer to sell at full value.
Three habits protect a Santos's value: keep the box, papers and spare strap; avoid aggressive polishing; and service it on schedule. If you are thinking of selling, our guide to what Tanks and Santos actually trade for covers the seller's side in detail.
Who the Santos suits
The Santos suits buyers who want one watch that works with tailoring and weekend clothes alike, and who prefer design heritage to diving specifications. If you are choosing between a Santos and a Cartier Tank, the Santos is the sportier, bracelet-first option; see our Cartier Tank price and value guide for the dressier alternative.
FAQ
How much is a Cartier Santos now?
Prices depend on size, metal and whether the watch is new or pre-owned. Steel is the entry point, and pre-owned current-generation examples usually trade below Cartier's retail list. You can see live prices on our Cartier inventory.
Is the Cartier Santos worth buying?
For a daily-wear design icon, yes. It combines over a century of history with practical modern features such as QuickSwitch straps and SmartLink bracelet sizing.
Do Cartier Santos hold value?
Steel current-generation models are liquid and have historically held their value well. Complete sets in unpolished condition hold their value best.
Medium or Large Santos?
The Large is more popular, but the square case wears bigger than its measurements suggest. Try both sizes if you can.
